Photoshop: 'Rename layer' keyboard shortcut

There is no built in hotkey for changing the name of a layer in Photoshop, nor can any be found online.

But here's how to add one yourself!

  • Click Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Select shortcuts for Application Menues
  • In the list, find Layer > Layer (Group) Properties and assign it a hotkey (e.g CTRL-Shift-R or CMD-Shift-R)

This will allow you to assign the layer a name and a color in a nice little popup.

As addition to this you can hit "Tab" when you finished naming the layer to jump directly to the next layer underneath it. In this way naming complete groupes is fairly easy and fast.
